“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

No one ever said building a house is easy. There are hundreds of decisions to make throughout the process. On top of making lots of decisions, most of us are also constrained to budgets. One of my biggest challenges during this process has been sticking to my budget. It’s so easy to want this or want that, especially when you see a photo with the exact item you’ve been looking at online.

When our family first started building our modern farmhouse I decided to create an instagram account to document our build and not flood my friends’ feeds with construction and inspiration photos. I followed my favorite instagram accounts (mostly interior designers, home builders, and home influencers). Through this process I saw gorgeous photo after gorgeous photo and of course I felt like I wanted it all.

Building Friendships Through Instagram

Along this journey I started interacting with other Instagram accounts. I have become friends with so many wonderful people, most of whom are building or living in a modern farmhouse. At first, most were in the same stages as me and over time I’ve seen more and more newly completed homes.

Of course seeing more completed homes makes me all the more eager to see my home finished. At times it even has me questioning and comparing if I made the right decisions in my selections along the way.

I am part of an amazing tribe of PNW Modern Farmhouse ladies through Instagram. Recently discussing how easy it is to get caught up in comparing your own journey to others. During our conversation I was reminded of one of my favorite Theodore Roosevelt quotes, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” .

comparison is the thief of joy

It’s so easy to start comparing your own journey’s to others, but try to remember this quote. Find joy in your own build whether you are still waiting to build, in the midst of construction, or facing set-backs. Today I am excited because our floors are being installed. Comment below and let me know what you’re celebrating today.
